My Favorite Things: October 2022

October Favorites

Happy End-of-October!

I’ve been thinking about God’s faithfulness this month, and how His faithfulness enables my faithfulness: because He is faithful, I can be faithful.

I can be faithful in my walk and in my daily life, and I can trust Him to accomplish these things through me. I don’t have to try harder, but I do have to trust harder. At least, trust harder than I usually do. (I’m a try-er who’s learning to become a trust-er.)

Anyway, how was October for you?

Here are a few things I’ve enjoyed or that have encouraged me this month…

Speaking of faithfulness, tracing God’s faithfulness has been such a helpful exercise for me over the years, especially in difficult seasons when it’s hard to wait or when it seems He’s not working.

Do you track your habits? I’ve done it for several years now and it really helps to motivate me and to identify which habits I’m not incorporating into my routine so I can ask myself why.

Should we “ask Jesus into our hearts”? Loved this!

This Bible study tip is key to understanding and applying Scripture correctly.

I’m really enjoying this podcast series called Resilience by Sharon McMahon. It’s about the incarceration of Japanese Americans during World War II but it also covers the history that led up to that point. It’s very well done and I’m learning so much!

Speaking of podcasts, I also enjoyed this episode on discerning Halloween and this one on discerning theology in worship music.

Here’s why deli sandwiches taste better than yours. I’ve given up making sandwiches at home but maybe I can up my game with these tips.

And here are 7 foods that will boost your happiness. I’m good with everything except coffee and coconut!

“How long should a fallen Christian leader wait before returning to the spotlight? It’s not the right question.”

And on that note: Christians love a comeback story. Too often it’s cheap grace. I loved and appreciated every word of this.

Here’s what to do when someone has used the Bible to hurt you.

And by the way, “Do not forsake the gathering of believers” isn’t about going to church. Loved this!

A friend sent me this Hebrew word study on exploring the mind of God and I can’t wait to check it out!

I really enjoyed this article on agency vs. control as I like to control things and freak out when I can’t. But I’m learning I can have agency over my response to things, especially things I can’t control.

On present bias - what it is and how to overcome it: “Present bias is the tendency for humans to settle for a smaller reward in the present rather than wait for a larger reward in the future, in a trade-off situation. It describes the trend of overvaluing immediate rewards, while putting less worth in long-term consequences.”

This letter to servants of Jesus in their 30’s and 40’s hit home on so many levels.

I really enjoyed and learned from this article on vocational faithfulness.

Enjoyed this: “You don’t know anything” and other writing advice from Toni Morrison.

This month I wrote about my new relationship with my phone and my spiritual birthday.

Currently on my nightstand: The Church, The Four Loves, and Heaven.

Speaking of books, here’s my fall reading list. What’s on yours?
