5 Books for Spiritual Growth

5 Books for Spiritual Growth

I put off writing this particular book recommendations post because… I just couldn’t narrow it down to only five books on spiritual growth! There are so many great books on spiritual growth out there, so I’ll probably do another post in the future to share more. But for now, here are a few of my favorites.

5 Books to Deepen Your Walk with Christ:

Growing Your Faith: How to Mature in Christ

Jerry Bridges

This book explains how to move past the basics to become more like Christ. If you’re a new believer looking for a book that will help you start or deepen your new life with God, this is a great book to start with, but honestly, I’d also recommend it to any Christian who’s looking to deepen their walk with Christ. I actually read it for the first time not too long ago and kept thinking, “Why didn’t I read this years ago?!”

Abide: Understanding the Secrets of Living for Jesus

Warren Wiersbe

This is another book that would be great for a new believer but is also helpful for any Christian who wants to walk more closely with Christ, or as the book title says, to abide in Christ.  This one is short, around 80 pages, and if you’ve never read Warren Wiersbe before, he is one of the best at explaining things in the simplest, easiest to understand ways, and he’s also a great writer and storyteller so I always enjoy his books.

The Life You’ve Always Wanted

John Ortberg

This book has been a favorite of mine for years, mostly for the engaging way John Ortberg weaves his own stories and learnings into each chapter. For a book on spiritual disciplines, it is a lot of fun to read (and reread), and since it’s such an enjoyable read, the book proves its point that spiritual disciplines really are for “ordinary” people and we’re all able to know God more deeply as we learn to practice them.

Sit, Walk, Stand: The Process of Christian Maturity

Watchman Nee

This book stays in my “to read again” pile; I reread it regularly because there is so much to absorb. It’s another short one, less than 100 pages, but I always manage to learn something new, even though I’ve read it so many times over the years. I wouldn’t recommend it to a new believer as it is a bit deep, but it’s a great resource for a mature believer ready for a deep dive. It will challenge you to new growth and to a new understanding of what it means to sit, walk, and stand in Christ.

The Fruitful Life

Jerry Bridges

I went through this book last year with a friend of mine, and we both got so much out of it. It’s a study on the Fruit of the Spirit, but in my opinion, it goes deeper than other books or studies I’ve read on this subject. I really appreciate that a reflection guide is included to give the reader pause to reflect on what’s been learned and to recognize ways to apply what God’s revealed through each chapter. This is another one I’ll be keeping in my “to read again” pile.
