My Top Ten Books of 2020

Favorite Christian Book Recommendations.png

I had such a hard time narrowing down this list.  I finally decided to choose five books that I’m going to read again next year because they were so good the first time, and I’m also choosing five books that I enjoyed and would recommend any believer to read.

Disclaimer: I am not in any way affiliated with anyone or anything on this list.  Just sharing the books that genuinely helped me and that I recommend.

Without further ado, here are my Top Ten Books of 2020 in no particular order:

Five Books I’ll Read Again Next Year:

The True Vine

by Andrew Murray

Andrew Murray breaks down John 15, the “Abide” passage, verse by verse, phrase by phrase, and explains it in a way that really makes you think about what it means to abide in Christ and let Him live through us.  Each chapter is only 2-3 pages long, so it’s easy to read and absorb each section’s content before moving on to the next.

Sit, Walk, Stand

by Watchman Nee

This short book is packed with spiritual wisdom and deep insights on living the Christian life.  It’s a great resource for a mature believer ready for a deep dive; it will challenge you to new growth and new ways of sitting, walking, and standing in Christ.

Created to Be God’s Friend

by Henry Blackaby

I wasn’t expecting to be as drawn to this book as I was, but somehow this study on the life of Abraham and his friendship with God spoke to me and motivated me to pursue my own friendship with God in ways I hadn’t before.  If you’re wanting to get to know God more intimately, this is a great book to get started.

The Source of My Strength

by Charles Stanley

Again, I wasn’t expecting to love this book as much as I did, yet I read it all from cover to cover - even the chapters I didn’t think would apply to me - and I immediately added it to my “Must Read Again” list.  Dr. Stanley shares his personal pains, traumas, challenges, and how God grew him through each of them to strengthen him and prepare him for both his own personal walk of faith and his very public ministry.  If you’re in a season of hurt, frustration, or challenges, this would be an encouraging and empowering read.

Experiencing God

by Henry Blackaby

I know this is a classic, but I actually hadn’t read it until this year.  I can see why it’s so widely read as it’s helpful in understanding God and how He relates to us.  If you’re wanting to know God and to learn to recognize how He works so you can join Him in His work, this is the book for you.

Five Books I Recommend:

If You Want to Walk on Water, You’ve Got to Get Out of the Boat

by John Ortberg

This is for you if you’re in a season requiring deeper faith and trust than ever before, and you’re ready to take some scary steps of faith in order to follow God’s call.

Life Interrupted

by Priscilla Shirer

This is for you if you’re in a season of divine interruptions - God’s “disrupted” the way you thought your life would go by taking you in a new direction - and you’re ready to obediently follow His new path for you.

Called to Be God’s Leader

by Henry Blackaby

This is for you if you’re in a season of leadership, whether that’s in your home, your job, your church, or anywhere leadership skills are needed.  It’ll encourage and equip you to be a leader who is led by God and who leads others to God.

When the Enemy Strikes

by Charles Stanley

This is for you if you’re in a season of spiritual warfare.  Dr. Stanley explains warfare and how to overcome the enemy’s attacks, as well as how to use spiritual armor.  Excellent resource!

Humility

by Andrew Murray

This is for all of us as we learn to be broken of our pride, our self-righteousness, our self-sufficiency and to humbly surrender to His grace, His righteousness, and His sufficiency.
